Safety case
A safety case applies to the operation of novel craft. Novel craft are craft that do not fit under other Maritime Rules. Its purpose is to ensure an acceptable level of safety is met for anyone involved in the operation and that steps are taken to protect the marine environment.
This page explains which craft may need a safety case and how to apply for approval.
Overview
The type of novel craft that can typically operate under a safety case include, but are not limited to:
- waka
- powered canoes or kayaks
- powered surfboards
- personal watercraft, including jet skis
- amphibious craft
- submersibles.
The requirements for a safety case are set out in Maritime Rules Part 40G.
Developing the safety case
The safety case is your plan for operating your novel craft safely. Before you develop the safety case we recommend you contact a Recognised Surveyor.
The plan for the safety case provides an overview of your operation and its safety including:
- the nature your operation
- its vessels
- the crew
- the safety system, such as safety procedures
- its ongoing maintenance.
- a copy of the ship's current certificate of fitness
- a completed and signed fit and proper person form
- a copy of your Ministry of Justice criminal record check from the Ministry of Justice, which must be less than 90 days old at the time you apply.
