Current topics

Fire safety focused inspection campaign

Fire safety is consistently the largest single category of deficiencies identified during Port State Control (PSC) inspections. In recent years it has been a significant proportion of detainable deficiencies.

This campaign will give us a clearer understanding of the state of fire safety systems on board foreign ships visiting our waters.

From 1 April 2026 to 31 May 2026, Maritime NZ conducted an inspection campaign focused on fire safety on foreign ships visiting New Zealand. The campaign was particularly focused on:

  • fire dampers
  • fixed fire extinguishing systems
  • crew familiarity with fire safety systems.

A ship will only have one focused inspection during this period.

Pilot ladders

Pilot ladders are being scrutinised by New Zealand pilots and Maritime NZ Port State Control. Make sure your pilot ladder and its installation are compliant and in good condition before departing for New Zealand.

Fuel changeovers and emissions

Masters must consult with their agent regarding the requirements for fuel changeovers and use of exhaust cleaning systems, as these requirements vary by region.

Biosecurity

From 31 October 2024, the Biosecurity Pre-arrival Report replaced the Masters Declaration and the Biofouling and Ballast Water Declaration forms.
