Safe operational plans for jet boats

Commercial jet boats carrying passengers at planing speed, on any river, for hire or reward must have a Safe Operational Plan (SOP) under Maritime Rules Part 82.

Learn how to develop an SOP for your jet boat operation and apply for a certificate from Maritime NZ.

a jet boat full of passengers is making its way up a wide river against the current and is approaching some rapids.

A vessel required to operate under a Safe Operational Plan cannot then be under a Maritime Transport Operator Plan.

How to develop a Safe Operational Plan

An SOP provides a practical set of safety requirements to ensure commercial jet boat operations have appropriate safety measures in place.

To develop an SOP for a jet boat operation, contact Maritime NZ to find a jet boat delegated person to inspect your boat and support you to enter the safety system.

How to apply

Before you begin operating, you must get a Certificate of Compliance from Maritime NZ.

To apply you need to include your:

  • SOP

  • completed application form

  • fit and proper person form

  • a copy of your Ministry of Justice criminal record check which must be less than 90 days old at the time you apply.

Your application will be checked by Maritime NZ for completeness, and you will be sent an invoice for $368. Once this is paid, your application will then be assessed by a Maritime NZ advisor.

Commercial jet boat maintenance

The New Zealand Commercial Jet Boat Association has created a guideline for commercial jet boat operators. The purpose of this guideline is to:

  • establish a high standard of jet boat maintenance
  • help build a common understanding of good jet boat maintenance practice across New Zealand.

Maritime NZ supports this guideline. It should help commercial jet boat operators prepare their jet boat maintenance programmes, which are required by Maritime Rules Part 82.
